Sod Installation Basics

SOIL PREPARATION

Remove all debris, rocks & weeds. Add 2 to 3 inches of soil amendment to help retain moisture and nutrients. Work up the soil to a depth of 6 inches. Break up any dirt clods.

IRRIGATION

One of the most important factors to a successful lawn is water. For optimum growth, an in ground sprinkler system should be installed. The best time to install a sprinkler system is before the sod is laid.

GRADING

Smooth all areas that are to be sodded. Roll lightly or irrigate to expose any irregularities on the soil surface. The ground level should be 1 inch below the sprinklers and sidewalks. Rake in a granular starter fertilizer, such as BOLERO SOD AND SEED STARTER from DELTA BLUEGRASS.

LAYING THE SOD

The sod should be installed within 18 hours of delivery. Never lay sod on hot, bone dry soil. It is a good idea to water the soil surface for a few minutes to moisten the soil before you begin sod installation. Start laying the sod along the longest straight edge; when you start the second row, stagger the joints (as you would if laying bricks). Lay the joints tightly but do not overlap the edges. If there is no mow strip or bender board at the edge; mound a small amount of soil along exposed edges to prevent dehydration of the edge. Roll the sod to insure good soil to root contact.

WATERING

The hotter and dryer the weather, the greater need for fast initial watering. In hot weather, the first watering should completely saturate the ground (1 to 2 hours). The sod needs to be watered at least 30 minutes 2-3 times a day in hot weather. In moderate weather, water 1-2 times a day. In the winter months 1 time a day is sufficient. Evening watering should be avoided because that may cause fungus. After 2 weeks, watering can be reduced if no stress is apparent. After 3 weeks normal watering should be adequate. Deeper less frequent watering promotes deeper root growth and is more effective than shallow daily watering.

MOWING

Mow on a high setting after 10 days. Thereafter, mow often enough to maintain a height of 2 to 2.5 inches.

LONG TERM CARE

A good complete fertilizer such as BOLERO LAWN CARE from DELTA BLUEGRASS or one recommended by a local nursery should be applied in the spring and fall. The frequency of fertilizing will depend on your soil, local climate, and desired color. Follow directions closely when applying fertilizer.
